I take your £1.99 plus £2.14 postage for haricot beans and double it: they were selling 6 onion 'plants' on ebay the other day, for £2.99 and £2.99 postage; that's one english pound per plant - and one plant might grow one onion - a pound per onion

So, one home made loaf = 1.5 hours of the oven being on full.

What are you making - charcoal?!

Crumbs - and I was sniggering when I saw our local garden centre selling 6 radish 'plug plants' complete with little woody radish in each cell for £2.99.

Was interested in the pinto beans. Are these given a different name when you sow from seed packets or do you just sow from the packets in the supermarket?

I know about saving my borlotti beans for winter dishes but which others do you save too?
Can see an opportunity for a real bargain here. :D

  • My 500g bag of borlotti beans cost 99p. After soaking and cooking they weigh 1.02 kg. If a tin of beans weighs 235g then I've got 4 and a third tins worth as Kittie says.

This works out as 23p for 235g, a tin of borlotti beans is 48p.

So dried beans are cheaper. Not sure how much more they become when you factor in fuel. I think Kittie, your beans were particulrly expensive.

Another point- you probably use a lot less of the earth's resources by not choosing a product in a can.

I take your point though about it not always being cheaper 'when you do the math' to be OS.

30 minutes to warm up, then about an hour to bake the loaf... rounded it up a bit there, can't remember how long they take. But I do know the 30 minutes before it even warms up is the offputting bit

410g can of baked (haricot) beans in tomato sauce costs 29p, if you rinsed the sauce off and weighed the beans, I wonder how much per kg the beans would work out at?? (May not be more cost effective as certain low cost brands can be a bit skimpy on the bean content these days!)

I know, I know, :o I'm not really going to do it, it's just that this thread has got my mind working in this curious way now!!

Blimey, is there something wrong with your oven? A loaf takes 40 mins. I just switch it on and put the loaf in, never bother preheating -mind, I do have a fan oven. It certainly doesn't need to be on for an hour and a half.
