This is why some people like to cook whole packets at once and freeze them, then you can treat them like tinned beans and add them straight to the stew.
I know you have to soak them first. I meant do you have to cook them on their own and then keep them in the freezer. I was planning to only cook mine when I needed them.0 -

It's usual to cook them on their own (not in the sauce - is that what you're asking). There's no law that says you have to cook a whole bag in one go, but the cost of cooking your own beans won't vary much if you cook 100g or 1kg
It's usual to cook the beans and then discard the cooking water - that leads to wind, according to Delia :rotfl:

In all money saving exercises I work out the percentage savings (or gain). Most of us would snap up a £1000 TV at £900 to get a 10% saving, sosurely buying a birthday card for 90p instead of £1 gives the same benefit?
Spending 1.32 instead of 1.64 for the beans gives you a saving of 19.5%. Pretty good ...........and a darn sight better than the interest in the banks at the moment.
Only you can decide if you have the time for cooking them.
I get a LOT more interest on the cash I have accumulated by investing in stocks in my spare time. Very much more than the 32p saved when cooking beans. I could not have spent that time wisely if I had been enslaved to a bean pot but then you do need a bit of vision, in order to see past cooking beans and 32 pences
Like I said in a recent post, it is horses for courses0 -

That is very true. 10 minutes on a full rolling boil so beware of bunging straight into a slow cooker. Not just wind but also poisons0 -

That's only for red kidney beans - other beans contain no toxins, AFAIK

Yes that's what I was asking, but I was thinking in stew/soup not sauce.Penelope_Penguin wrote: »There's no law that says you have to cook a whole bag in one go, but the cost of cooking your own beans won't vary much if you cook 100g or 1kg
That's true, but if I put them in the freezer I'll never see them again and never use them as I'll forget they are there when making stew etc. If they are in a packet nextto the lentils and pearly barley etc. there will be more chance of me using them.Penelope_Penguin wrote: »It's usual to cook the beans and then discard the cooking water - that leads to wind, according to Delia :rotfl:

I thought it was the beans them selves that did that?
Anyway, I have some beans soaking now, so I'll see how I get on.
PS. I put a tea towel over the bowl, so the beans won't know it's not night time0 -

You need to soak them.
You need to cook them for about 10 minutes, sometimes 20
What you do after that, freeze them or use them straight away is your choice.
Soaking alone will not leave them soft enough to use - they need the rolling boil both to get rid of any toxins and to soften them enough to chuck into the food [soup, stew, chilli etc].
You can do a mugful at a time; or a bag at a time....but dispose of the water you used [don't use it in any of the food] as any toxins leached will need disposing of.
I do 2 mugfulls at a time when I am lacking in freezer space....it does about 4 meals and the beans for the other 3 are tucked away in the freezer. If I have lots of freezer space I'll do a large pot load and then freeze the lot.0 -

So why are you wasting your time reading and posting in a forum?
Why be enslaved in a forum when you could be investing in stock and shares.0 -

I think it takes longer to write a thread quizzing the economics of cooking beans, than it does to cook the things.I could not have spent that time wisely if I had been enslaved to a bean pot but then you do need a bit of vision, in order to see past cooking beans and 32 pence
The actual active time spent in cooking beans can be 1 or 2 minutes at most. Walk away from the beans once you have put them on to boil; then you can trade stocks and shares whilst they are boiling....multitasking!!!0 -

Maybe to help out as a poster who makes useful & and/or interesting & and/or amusing comments - to help ensure the "majority of the mix" of the posts on this Board are worth reading - it helps to "water down" the proportion of comments made by those posters who love sticking in an aggressive comment whenever they can.....unfortunately there is the odd person like that.
I dont really understand why people do that - having only earlier this morning read an aggressive comment directed at me.... Still - I guess its a hobby to make that sort of comment to some people:cool:.
So - to sum up: I dont feel an attacking comment on Kittie is warranted. She has made lots of useful posts - and doubtless will make further ones. i know, from experience, though that its upsetting to have people come in making stirring/aggressive comments against you - when all you are doing is making useful/trying to be helpful comments....
Well - its given me a thought to ponder for the day: ie just why DO people throw in aggressive/unhelpful comments when they arent warranted? hmm.....puzzled....hmmm...0
