car tax releif for cycling to work?

Options
I don't know how true this is but a lifeguard I know told me if you cycle to work and own a car that you can claim a percentage back off your road fund from the dvla for doing so...I have looked everywhere and can't find any evidence, the only thing I can find is the cycle to work scheme where you don't pay tax on a new bike. He also said that your employer has to state you are using you bike for so many days

...Does anyone know about this?

  • Never heard of such a thing. I don't use my car to get to work either, nor do many of the millions that work in London but I have never heard of anyone claiming road fund tax back. I expect it is not true.
  • Not road tax, but if you do use a bicycle for business mileage (in the same way you would use a car to visit clients etc), there is an approved mileage rate for bycicles which is 20p/mile. Obviously, if your employer doesn't pay you expenses, you can claim the tax back for this amount in the same way you would if youused a car or motor cycle.

I can find nothing on the internet to support what the life guard told you so either he/she is pulling your leg and talking out of their ar*e, or they have things completely wrong and really mean the approved mileage rates.
