Hi
Im running my car on 50% veg oil with no problems and saving a small fortune too & helping the planet on the way.
But I want to go 100% and wondering where is the cheapest place to get the conversion kits from?
any help would be appreciated

do you mind me asking how you managed to run it on 50% veg oil? Surely not just bunged in the engine? (sorry for the daft question).0 -
I did it for the envoromental reasons, but saving cash is good too.
I run my car 80-90% veg oil and its great except slightly pong first thing in the morning, lol. Audi a2 1.4tdi returning 54mpg @ 50pence per litre done over 50,000 miles - eat your heart out! now thats what i call a cheap car too run!! Funny questions in tescos sometimes when i buy 8-12
3 litre bottles at a time.
Sorry doesnt answer the question but i think you will be looking at about £1000 fitted last time i looked, can take upto 2days to fit and test. It also depends on type of kit, auto switching, second tank, one tank ect ect goto google theres loads of info.

ps, if you car breaks beacause you try it dont blame me...0 -
I think the practise is a great idea, especially when you realise how much cooking oil has to be taken away and processed (thrown away?) from the food industry every day. I have asked around about this and...
1 I thought using veg oil instead of fuel oil is illegal as you don't pay the correct duty.
2 I think you should make it clear you can only get away with putting it in a diesel car's tank and not a petrol engine. I heard even then the diesel car should be a less sophisticated version, eg it might harm a tdi. However Munkstar is using it in an audi tdi so you can't really argue with that, if it keeps going!
3 As long as its the right diesel engine you don't need to convert it.
Maybe others could help clear up these thoughts...?
These thoughts are only hearsay, so don't blame me if your car blows up!!!0 -
I use it in my car and its not illegal, you just fill in forms every month and pay the duty.
It can only be used in a diesel engine.
Veg oil bought from the supermarkets can be put straight into the tank so long as it is mixed with some diesel, no less than 50/50 in winter and up to 70/30 or even 80/20 in summer.
The diesel filter needs to be changed every 3 months, and it is a good idea to fit an inline filter.
The best (money saving and environment) way of doing it is to get used oil from a fish shop and filter it, but it's fiddly and not for me just yet. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0 -

How much is the duty per litre and where do you get the forms?0 -
oh yes! more info please...
this is something we've been talking about for ages but have no idea how to start.weaving through the chaos...0 -
If like Munkster you do it illegally you risk having your car confiscated. If you do it legally you pay 47p per litre duty.
New oil from Tesco @ 45p litre then becomes not worth it except in an environmental sense. Free used oil from chip shops works out at half the price of normal diesel.
You can look into transetrification as a process of treating the oil before use if you do this you can claim duty at around 22p litre but if customs decide to pay you a visit and decide your oil is not transetrified enoughyou will get a backdated bill for all your oil @ 47p litre and possibly a fine, court appearance and whatever else they decide to throw at you.

What on earth do you need a conversion kit for?! Most cars will happily run on 100% bio diesel - are you talking about the kit with the heater to make sure it doesn't solidify in the winter or is your car just an awkward one?
You don't really need a heater kit. As I've previously mentioned in a number of threads, just add a percentage of diesel OR stick about 5% petrol into the mix (yes, I said petrol). I've run a Peugeot 205turbo and 106 on bio diesel at 100% and they loved the stuff. The only recomendation I make is that you fit an inline filter in the fuel line just before the fuel filter because bio diesel or veg oil is thicker than regular diesel and it will tend to pick up any rubbish from the bottom of your fuel tank and propel it through the fuel line which will clog up your fuel filter. The inline filter costs about 60p and you can easily fit it yourself and then change it when it gets full.
The only thing to bear in mind with pure veg oil is that it is quite soapy, you should only really regularly use the treated stuff that has been thinned or it may coke up your engine a bit.
Yes, you MUST pay the fuel duty if you are on a public road, revenue & customs can dip your tank if they suspect you are using veg oil.
Have a look at https://www.bio-power.co.uk they have some good info & they run courses if you want to start a bio diesel business :TDebt 2007 £17k
Current Debt approx £7.5k
Target - to pay off all debts by 2020 :A0 -
used to run an old ax on 100% lidl veg oil during the summer months with no problems and no conversion surely it would only be a case of making up a small heat exchanger may be out of 28mmcopper and acouplel of fittings or even a kenlow pre heat system as used in military vehicals in norway
good luck jason
you have got me thinking maybe i wil give it a try0 -
