Revamp a bed cover ideas

Hey all,
I`m looking for some ideas and insperation about my bedcover. Its one of those "oh la la" fancy bed cover types with lots of satin and flimsy net bits and fancy embroidery. I've had it about 4-5 years and now its quite frankly terrible to look at. Lots of holes and pulls and tears etc, which is dissapointing as I think it cost a bomb when it was new.(Can't be sure as it was a present).
The base is a gorgous brushed flannel which is super snuggly for chilling on the sofa with during winter so really i want to save my cover.
I was thinking of knitting lots of large strips or squares and making a new patchwork top for it as i`m quite a keen knitter and have a fair old stash.
Does anyone else have any insperation or ideas to share??
kind regards
Fishcake

Hiya! Might be easier to help if you can post a pic? So we can see what we have to start with.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I am looking to make a sampler throw myself as I generally knit dishcloths whenever I want to try out a new pattern, and I have got enough now :rotfl:so thought I might try something like this http://yscmama.typepad.com/photos/samplerafghan/index.html (you can see the completed thing in one of the photos). There's loads on ravelry (https://www.ravelry.com) - I liked this one http://www.canadianliving.com/crafts/knitting/knit_a_community_afghan.php and this one http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Granny-Annie/an-african-adventure, the pattern for which is here http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/an-african-adventure . As you've probably gathered, I thought it would be fun to do something bright, but I also like the thought of doing the first one above all in white to showcase the patterns.
Have a look on ravelry - there are some brilliant ideas on there.0 -
I'd applique some patches on, pretty fabrics in coordianting colours, cut out shapes, flowers, butterflies, hearts, skulls, spiders, whatever takes your fancy and then do blanket stich round the edge. You can use something like bondaweb to position if you don't feel confident but it will make them a little stiff. I'd buy matching embroidery silks to go round in. (a large-sh embroidery hoop may help).0

If you knit squares it may be akward to wash properly so you could felt them in the washing machine before constructing the top so they will be unlikely to shrink further.
You could always knit / crochet flower shapes and sew these on. If it was me and the pulls were little I'd be tempted to embroider over them (little stars or flowers are easiest, say just 5 little stiches radiating from centre).0
