that a bad mark stays on your credit report ie a late payment etc and do they automatically get removed

I think it is 6 years before "bad marks" are off your credit file.

This would fall under the Data Protection Act. A company is allowed to hold information on you for 6 years so if your account gets closed, it will stop showing 6 years later. Actual proper defaults stay for 6 years.
