Joint Debt ~ Shortfall on a mortgage

Hi my ex sold a property that still had my name on in 1999, in 2000 an agency or sub department of Britannia BS wroe to me asking for £10,800 I was on income support and a single parent as my ex had moved his girlfriend into my old flat. When they sold the flat she pretended to be the Mrs and so the property was sold with a shortfall of mortgage arrears etc. When they wrote to me I just wanted them off my back so I agreed to pay ten pounds a month and he would also pay something which I was not privvy too. Anyway 5 years later the payments stopped being taken and he department dealing with this had closed.
Now September 2009, another letter askiing me for the whole amount again with no reference to my payments or anything my ex may have paid. I spke to him and he says he cleared it, but hey presto he can't find proof of where he sent the payment. He also claims he has had no such letter from them! Why would they chase me and not him???
I know it is a horror story but can they really do this!

I think this is one for citizens advice to start off with - possibly also post on the consumeractiongroup forum to see what the legal standing on this would be.
Who are you getting the payment request from?
Have they shown proof that the debt is owed?
You may be able to send a subject access request (SAR - cost £10) to whoever you were making the payments to and get a note of the transactions that were made. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
