What do you do each day to make a difference.

Hi,

I was just wondering how everyone gets through each day dealing with their debts?

I am aware that its a slow process and we should take it in small steps however im fairly new and wanna feel like im making a difference each day.

I've joined the PAD challenge which is good fun, but i hate just plodding along.

Thanks for reading!

  • Things like taking lunch to work, or using vouchers to pay for something, help and slowly start to make a differece.

My husband and I have forund that once you have about £500 in the bank life is easier, so the car tax can be paid or the house insurance then the number of payments out of your account is reduced it make a huge difference.

  • Posting on the daily thread (what DFW thing you do today) helps me, even if I dont post on it (often) I read it, I used to post on it everyday but cant now. Little things like turning a light off when you leave a room, using up left overs, going for a free walk etc, all add up and help us form healthy financial habits for when we are debt free, which will help us stay debt free.
Also, MSE helps me, even if its just by keeping motivated.
  • Just keep reminding yourself that every small thing you do makes a difference. I have got big debts and even though I have made some major changes to my lifestyle its still going to be a long journey for me. When I feel like I am not achieving anything I remind myself of what I have done well lately (eg my son is growing like mad at the moment and I have just bought him some jeans off ebay for a few quid rather than getting the Next Directory out).
    Good luck with it!
  • Being more organised (making a packed lunch, flask of coffee for school, waking up early to walk and avoid the bus)
Updating my spreadsheets daily keeps me motivated.
Ask myself "Do I really need this or is there something at home that I can use instead?" before making a purchase.
Buying food as I need it, rather than bulk buying/BOGOF and then chucking half of it away at the end of the week.

Using up leftovers, looking in the fridge everyday and making sure to use things that are starting to look a bit 'peaky'. Reading this forum, unplugging appliances, saving water from shower for garden, cooking from scratch, using veggies and herbs from garden, rewearing clothes if they still are reasonably clean, asking myself if I really need something when I am going to buy something and staying positive and enjoying the journey:j

  • I've now moved to an office building with no canteen so I'm not tempted by food I can't afford or need.I've challenged myself to stick to cheap packed lunches too. Before my LBM I used to think I was being frugal taking an egg mayo sandwich into work for lunch.......an egg mayo sandwich made with a M&S sandwich filler bought on my store card when I had eggs & a jar of mayo at home already. It's so ridiculous looking back at it now!:o

I use my leftovers - currently I have some leftover stock from cooking a tiny joint of beef the other day, so yesterday I bought half a pound of best stewing steak and have slung it in the pot, and it is now cooking away nicely.

I write a shopping list and shop from that, I rarely buy clothes and carefully consider each purchase - such as the weekend when I bought a handbag which was less than half price in a sale - I thought what I had in my wardrobe to go with it and when I remembered that I had about 10 items so I bought it. I also use vouchers - which I earn from my shopping (free money) my LVs get used in Starbucks as a treat when I am out at business meetings or mystery shopping.

I always re-wear clothes if they are clean. I wash every day but have a bath every week. If I have meetings in Birmingham then I will take the bus instead of the car. I make my own lunch.

I try and earn £10 of free money every day and then try and have NSDs too:D
