Started a new job - still got a 2nd weekend job - how to handle the tax code issue

Hi all

I have started a new job, and they need my tax details. This is be a normal 37hr job weekdays. I still have my weekend job on top of this and wish to continue.

I just finished university and so the Tax Code for my weekend supermarket job is "B" on a tax basis of "Normal". Is this a Full Time Student tax code? I need to change this to a normal tax code now since I have graduated and no longer studying. I will earn less than £6,000 for the weekend job.

How do I handle the two job tax code issue?

I'd appreciate any help and advice.

Best

Vic

    Is it B or BR?

Students don't have a special tax code as I recall?
  • Hi Lokolo

As I read it from my pay slip next to me - it says "B" only.

Do you have 3 numbers then a letter? For example 647L?
  • No, it just says "B" under Tax Code section. Looks odd I know, but thats all it says. (?)

how much are you being taxed on the weekend job? (if at all)

If you are being taxed 20%, then you are on a BR code. If this is the case, then you can set up your full time job to use your personal allowance.

If the weekend job is BR and this has been your only source of income since 6th April 2009 (including bank interest), then you will have a large amount of unused personal allowances meaning you will likely not pay tax on the full time job for a while.

Also, if the weekend job is BR and was BR last tax year (6th April 2008 to 5th April 2009) and it was your only source of income, you may be entitled to a refund of tax for that year as you did not have the benefit of your personal allowance.

The best way to set up your personal allowance when you have a full time job and a part time job is to use it on your full time job and have the part time job set as BR.
