Anyone Gone BR in London High Court?

Hi Folks

I am wondering if anyone has gone BR in High Court in London? How did it go? Can you just turn up with your paperwork?

I believe that as I live in London I have this option rather than using local High Court - can someone confirm this. Do I need permission from local court, or if it suits me better can I just make the decison myself

Any advice and info much appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hi

You just turn up to the High Court when you have the fee and the forms completed. You have to go to the far end of the court to the payments office, pay your fee and then go to the bankruptcy division. You need to be at the bankruptcy division between 10 -10.30.

You do not need to get permission from another court to go to High Court - although it depends which part of London you live in as to whether this is the right court for you.

You don't have to see the Judge at the High Court but you will need to take an additional £12 fee with you as they charge you for witnessing the oath. Otherwise it is a pretty painless process and you will spend quite a bit of time hanging around.

    Good luck
  • Thanks for that Mazzatee

The main draw of using the High Court was that I had read you can just turn up without needing to book an appointment - I can sometimes find it hard to get out of the house when I had planned due to commitments at home, so this would suite me best. Thanks for confirming this to be the case.

I live in The London Borough of Harrow - does anyone know if this (The High Court) then is the one I can use based on where I live? If not where else could I use?

Questions and more questions - thanks for any help - wait til I start filling in the forms!

As for waiting around on the day, I will make sure to take a good book, a bottle of water and a snack with me (don't want to be paying central London prices for anything).

As always any advice or information much appreciated.

  • Hi Runningbackwards,
I did go BR in the HC last week. As others say, the process was straightforward. I advice you to get there by 10 (I did so and didn't have to wait, though by 10.20 there was a queue). As you enter the HC you will be given a set of instructions to get to the office where you pay the fees (one really needs a map to find it!...is like playing Cluedo!!!). Then you get back to the main hall and follow the second set of instrutions to get to the BR clerk. Mine was extremely nice and reassuring. She went through my forms (bring them unsigned, as it has to be witnessed by her/him), sworn me and told me to come back at 2.30. Then, at 2.30, I was given my BR order.

One thing, do not get alarmed if the don't contact you after 3 or 4 days as they say. I went BR on 7 September and nobody has contacted me so far. I called the OR's office to ask and they told me that they have so much work that they didn't get round to call.

    Good luck ;)

You don't have a choice which court you go to. The High Court serves all of London and is the only one that deals with bankruptcies.

check here to make sure it is the correct court for your address.

I went bankrupt there and yes, you do just pick a day and turn up with your forms. You only needed one copy of forms when I went BR. It is a lovely building and if there is any high profile case on in court that day there will be photographers and tv crews outside filming so you may get your 15 seconds of fame!

  • Thanks for the advice Southerner & 5yearplan

Sorry I have not replied sooner - caught up with things on the home front.

Your replies have made me decide that it will be the HC for me.

Will let everyone know when I take the plunge!
