CCA Request - next steps

I have written to Aktiv Kapita regarding a default entry on my credit file for £1.4k, using the default CCA letters on this forum.
They have responded basically saying they don't have the original paperwork and will contact the original creditor for it. They have also said the account is on hold until they can get the paperwork, to which they also added they may not be able to get.
I have two questions, can I get them to remove the default off my credit file whilst this is in dispute? And what is my next course of action?
What sort of time limit do they have?
Ok technically three question...
Thanks.
