If you got a letter from Abbey, they should still have the documents. You could phone them and ask for a copy of the letter - failing that you could send them a subject access request. This would mean that under the Data Protection Act, they are required to provide you with a copy of all information that they hold on you - cost £10

  • Send Red a letter telling them the account is in dispute...

    Dear Sir,

I would like to inform you that the balance of this account is now in dispute with the original creditor. Therefore, no further action shall be taken until this matter is resolved.

May I remind you that Section 2.8k of the Office of Fair Trading’s Debt Collection Guidance states that it is an unfair practice for a creditor to continue collections activity on a debt that is being disputed.

Then they will leave you alone. Then contact Abbey and ask for the subject access request. They are legally obliged to send you a copy of every bit of correspondance ever sent to you ever! The letter will be in there....

If you send Abbey the SAR letter, you should be able to see when the last payment was made from the transactions that they provide and they should also provide you with a copy of all correspondence - including the letter stating that payment need no longer be made.

As Hannah says, you should just send Red a debt in dispute letter.
