Internet cutting out.

I've a problem with the internet connect cutting out, it's happening two or three times a day. For instance on this site I might want to go to a new thread but it come up with ...'cannot be found'. I then have to shut the computer down and re-start, sometime it will come back other time it will show connection not made, or no dialing tone. Although if I try the phone it's still working. Is it a problem with the broadband provider of or the phone company. I've also notice that tonight this site is very slow, is that just me?

Any advice would be appreciated, so that I can complain to the broadband people of the phone company. I'm a bit of an Luddite where computers are concerned.

It has been very slow tonight - and up to about a half hour ago (coincidentally - about the time you posted;) )

On the wider problem - regrettably not much help. But my last problem with my Internet connection turned out to be a virus which Spybot Search & Destroy / Spyware Blaster identified - after AVG had failed to unearth it. You done a thorough virus check?

I had similar problems with my own broadband connection, check out my previous post http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=123396&page=2

Make sure you check everything internally before you call anyone out though

I've had random cutouts for the last 3 weeks, ever since BT worked on the line nearby. ISP is trying to get the great BT to sort, but as its random and my connection is mostly over 400kbps they are reluctant. I'm surprised you have to shut the computer down unless the whole system has ground to a halt. If you are on broadband/dialup just close the connection and retry. I suspect it a line problem more than a computer one.

If you are on cable you can expect some distruptions because of the merge between NTL and Telewest.

Why should there be some disruptions during merge? I'm only asking because we've had Telewest blueyonder broadband for years without a problem, but today it has been cutting out regularly while in use. Thought it might have been the heat, or the roadworks that are going on further along the road, but am now curious about what type of disruptions we might expect during merge.

    I think its just luck...

Problems I'm having:- Slow browsing, pages hang for 4-8 seconds before refreshing. My cable TV sometimes stutters too.

My freind in Bradford looses his net on most days, modem disconnects for hours at a time. He also suffers from slow browsing.

All the telewest customers have had the speed increase now, NTL customers are next on the list for speed increase then we should start to see some stability improvements. I've also been told that all the green box's on the streets (CAB's) are to be replaced.

Think it just depends where you are....

Thanks for info. I'll put up with this problem of connection going off and on until tomorrow to see if it clears up then. I'm still not convinced that the digging work along the road is not to blame in some way. Doesn't seem to be telewest, but it is certainly alongside the cable system.

We too have been having to reboot the TV nearly every day, but that's a minor inconvenience and is probably due to the fact that the TV and cable box are in a warm room - storage heaters are going off today.
