Re future mortgage apps - should I ask to have this removed from credit file?

A month ago I tried to apply for a Co-op mortgage. I'm an existing banking customer with them and had an AIP, but after a week of being told that their computer systems were down and they couldn't process any applications (?!), I gave up. Nothing was ever issued or signed and no one ever even called me back or emailed me after telling me they were having IT problems.
Following this, I had an Abbey mortgage approved and am moving forward with a purchase.
Then I received a letter in the post this week informing me that I'd been refused a mortgage by the Co-op and citing my credit file (which I view regularly and is pretty much perfect with the three main agencies). This is puzzling but isn't otherwise a big deal immediately because I already have a mortgage agreed and had no idea the Co-op were even processing my earlier application.
I'm more concerned about any future purchases and mortgage applications because I know that you're generally asked whether you've ever been turned down for a mortgage.
Should/can I ask the Co-op to remove their search from my credit file? And will I be obliged to declare this in future mortgage applications?
Thanks!

Contact the Co-Op and ask them to clarify their letter, it maybe that they have just used a standard letter and not the most appropriate one in your case, as the case didn't proceed. Get them to explain themselves!
Their search for the agreement in principle is likely to show and to my knowledge can't be removed as it was done with your permission etc. That is all that shows on the credit file thow a search, not the outcome.I am a Mortgage Adviser
