Question re Barclays Cash Account

Another question please:

I have opened a basic cash account with Barclays - however I now realise that the money I owe on my Barclaycard will be lumped into the BR figures - I don't have the money to clear the debt, and now realise that the OR would frown on clearing one debt in preference to others anyway... My re-payments on credit cards are up to date at the moment.

So the question is do you think that Barclays will let me keep the account running if the OR is OK with it - I have my benefits paid in and the balance is usually very low.

I can open a Co-op account, but the nearest branch is miles away, while Barclays is literally just around the corner, my closest bank geographically.

Any advice much appreciated

  • Barclays are usually fine with BR's if they owe them money and won't close the account.

You don't need to be anywhere near a Co-op, I have had an account for 3 years and never set foot in a branch. You open the account over the phone, if you need to deposit money into the account then you can go into a Post Office and do it. You get a Visa Electron card which you can use in any link machine, internet and phone banking, SO's and DD's.

Barclays will withdraw internet banking when you go BR.

  • Thanks Tigerfeet.

I will open a Co-op account if it allows internet banking for BRs - why I wonder do Barclays take this facility away? Funny they do that if they let you keep an account open even if you owe money to another arm of their organisation.

I do a lot online as I can find it difficult to get out of the house easily being a carer, so looks like it's the Co-op for me.
  • No problem RB,

Just be aware that the internet banking can be a few days behind, so keep a close eye on things even if it says the available balance is such and such, it is usually lieing.

  • Thanks Again Tigerfeet

My plan was to practically zero out any funds (would be low anyway given current financial situation) before the BR.

I tend to keep a very tight grip on what little money I have, but I have seen a few posts about people getting caught out with balance on the net not matching what is really available.

Good advice to us all to avoid getting whacked with OD charges!

The Co-op Cashminder account now comes with a VISA debit card, not Electron.

Actually book12....Coop card its still an `electron` in all but name ( although says visa debit on the card)....I have used Coop electron since Dec08 then new card in June says `debit` on it with raised numbers.....makes absolutely no difference at all....still it is not accepted where elecrton was not accepted. I made a point of trying it :D:D

First 4 digits 4508 the same as old electron card.....authorisation at point of sale only.

Barclays vs Coop? personally Coop wins for me....the online banking & their telephone banking are far superior to Barclays IMHO. I don`t need a branch either...less opportunity for the staff to try & cross sell pointless products to improve their own bonuses..

Just my opinion of course...comes from years of experience.;);)

  • Thanks for the heads up on that So Sad Angel.

I shop a fair bit online so I guess I should think about taking o2 up on their cash card thing they have brought out - I am a customer and they have emailed offering me one - there is no credit attached you just load cash on, so I should be able to keep it post bankruptcy, shouldn't I? If anyone knows this to be the case advice would be appreciated - Anyone?

So many things to think about....
  • There is only a few places online that don't accept Electron, Tesco being the biggest one, so you won't have a problem with most places. If it hasn't got an Electron symbol then try under visa.

If you are going for a pre pay card then the O2 one is no better than an Electron card most people have found on here. The one most of us seem to use is the Cash plus card.

Doesn't the cashplus cost either a monthly fee or a transaction fee though?

The 02 cards are free for loading and transactions (including cashpoint withdrawls) in the UK if you are an 02 customer!
  • Just to say I've had a Coop account for 2 years and never had a problem with it. I pay cheques in either in the post office or by pre-addressed envelopes that Coop provide.
