If my lender refuses a mortgage application its currently with underwriters would it be worth considering trying a broker

Depends on the reason why they decline you.
If you can fix it, do so before re-applying.
If you can't, then whether it is something specific that your particular lender doesn't like but other lenders might, could be known by brokers.0 -

once one application is refused is there a period of time I should wait before re applying to anyone0

If your application is refused, see a broker with a copy of your current credit file, don't start to make random applications with different lenders as that will harm your credit profile.I am a Mortgage Adviser
