Tesco charge exrta for cardboard packaging

Options
Hi, this is my first post on this forum,I was in tesco the other day i noticed that they have an offer on a product i buy on a regular basis,(not usually from tesco) the product is Napolina peeled plum tomatoes 400g cans, a single can is priced at 49pence, so x4 =£1.98,On the same shelve
there was packs of 4 400g cans wrapped in cardboard to hold them together, at the checkout they wanted an extra £1.09=£3.09 not the £1.98 it should of been, they constantly are doing this and no one seems to give a dam,in my book it is deception and they are overcharging the customer ,£1.09 for a piece of cardboard? as we are talking about the exact same product here and quantity too,"EVERY LITTLE HELP'S" not the comsumer that is for sure , btw other big sumpermarkets have had similar offers but charged the same price wether per can or packof 4 or 6 ect, tesco suck, they are too big we will all suffer because of next to no competition

Of course multipacks are a different price from single tins. Why would they not be different prices? No-one expects them to have the same offers. And it is not true that other supermarkets do not do the same - they regularly have separate offers on different sizes.

Yep, you're shot down in flames here. The single cans are on special, the 4-packs aren't.

    Hmmm

It might be "what they all do" but is it right?

Tesco own brand sweetcorn is cheaper individually than in a 3-pack. No special offers, nothing different. 3 x 200g £1.19; single can 38p (£1.14 for 3) Bizarrely a 325g can is 37p !! £1.11 for 3

How many "bulk buys" are actually dearer?

Edit- tesco own brand chopped toms - 48p for 1 can; £2.19 for 4 pack. Same with the Peeled Plum toms too.

    Tesco beans - 4 pack £1.68; 6-pack £2.68
    T-Light choices beans single 41p; 4-pack £1.74

    Branston Tinned Spaghetti 37p a tin; 4 pack £1.83
    Heinz 45p; 4 pack £1.96
  • The question that should be being asked is why do multipacks have to be wrapped in plastic or cardboard ?

If they are willing to sell you 4 cans of beans at a lower unit price than a single item - let the till work it out and let you buy 4 single cans at the reduced price - why create more rubbish for me to dispose of ??
  • Just about everyone on here knows to double check prices on various pack sizes, not just multipacks - it is not unusual to find that a big jar of, say, Branstons is more expensive ounce for ounce than a small one. I now consider it a challenge to make sure I get everything the best price I can, which includes instore price comparisons between pack sizes.
