A very good midgy repellant is Avons " Skin so Soft" I gather it is sold as much for this use as its original skin softening propertiesMidges come out from April but worse than them is the mosquito which appears in mid-March due to our milder climate & can leave a nasty, itchy water blister.

another vote for May here although for me the last two summers have been pretty good,betterthan the rest of the country! September is often a good month here too but this year it hasn't been so good, feels like Winter this week with all the wind & rain we've been having!0

I would say September is your best bet or middle to end of May. It seems a bit of fluke but as soon as the schools go back quite often the weather improves, so you might get some reasonable weather early September.
