dishwasher safe?

I have just got my first dishwasher :j:j (well parents always had one, but my 1st of my own-after 15 years of washing up, so I am very excited ) and I was reading the manual (its a siemens one) and it says not to put wooden utensils in... Why not
I am sure I have always put wooden spoons in my parents?
And can I stick plastic takeaway tubs in there?

  • wooden stuff comes out feeling a wee bit slimy, not sure why possibly because its saturable? i put in wooden spoons at the works one. dont have wooden bowls or anything so have never chanced it with them lol

plastic boxes are fine but watch out as not all plastic stuff can go in. those bbq plastic dishes etc you get at homebase etc are not dishwashable but will tell you by having a sticker on them saying if they are or not.

Wooden spoons and boards will eventually crack and split from repeated soaking in hot water. I don't actually care about having to bin old wooden spoons once per year or so and I think they're more hygenic washed in a dishwasher, but you may not want to put your best olive wood salad bowl in the dishwasher.

  • Cheers, most of mine are really ancient so I reckon if they get broke, they have served me well :)
The plastic tubs don't say DW safe-they are the ones chinese comes in.....

Havent had a takeaway for a long time but I'm fairly sure i used to put mine in.
Try it with just the one (put it on the top shelf though) then you'll know.

And you will get to the stage where you wondered how you ever managed with out a dishwasher. If i had the choice between my dishwasher breaking down or my washing machine, the WM would get my vote every time. I cant take my pots to the launderette can i?:D

The best time is Christmas - two minutes after everyone has finished lunch it all in the dishwasher and everything is cleared away - Bliss.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thanks, I will give them a go. I have a feeling I am going to adore it :D

Another question though-I have an old microplane grater (about 6-7years at least-its an old one with a big blue rubber handle, and the blades are interchangeable unlike the new ones) Is it safe for the DW or should I just carry on handwashing it?
  • The takeaway containers are fine but need to be up top. I would think the Grater is too, mine has a removeable hanlde, which I always washed by hand, but the rest went up top too. (No DW anymore, sadly)

Thanks, will just handwash the microplane-not the end of world-I love it SOOO much I wouldn't want to hurt it :D I came across a rotary microplane parmesan grater online today, american sites, am working very very hard to resist at the moment:o

Next question-what is the likelihood of a morphy richards food processor from about 6 years ago (quite a good one I think, don't know model number but has liquidiser too that fits on top) having dishwasher safe bowl/jug/blades etc? I am thinking I would use it so much more if I don't have to wash the damn thing  I am presuming my 30 year old kenwood chef is NOT dishwasher safe :rotfl::rotfl:

(sorry am very excited on the whole DW front, please forsee more questions, am hoping it will be a VERY successful gadget, unlike the slow cooker that is used for stock, and soup :()
  • When OH moved in with his "bone" carving, set I asked if it was ok to dishwasher.

YES he said.So we did. Now his "bone" carving set we wash by hand. He didn't understand dishwashers... think his ex dealt with that LOL.
