Hi folks ,
My friend has recieved a letter today from provident.
The letter state that they have taken over the repayments for an outsatnding debt owned by westcot . They have listed two 0% interest rate of repayments over 25 or 52 weeks (both she cant afford) it states at the bottom of the page a new agreament with provident will have to be signed and a rep will make contact in the next few days.if not she is to phone provident who will arrange it all for her.
What should she do she does not want some one knocking on the door every week for money (she does live about 12 miles form the nearest town and i cant see them coming out by car for 52 weeks for £14) I have told her to bin the letter and carry on paying the token payment until she can afford more ALL ADVISE WELCOME MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL)

Hi Lord Finch
I'd suggest you advise her not to sign a new agreement (always a bad idea) and not to call them.
What was the debt originally for? How long has she been making token payments?
There is a letter that she can send to revoke the right to visit her property - but like you I think there are unlikely to send anyone.
Have they provided proof that the debt has been assigned to them (a notice of assignment)? She could write an ask for that and if they do provide it, she could then write and offer to continue with her token payments as that is still all she can afford.

It was for a credit card debt £850 she pays £3 pm . The whole letter looks to me as if some how this provident group have now got in the loop it says that they have been asked to collect it not that they own it etc it says we can send our friendly employee to basicaly cut a deal with you to pay off the original debt and will give you a £150 rebate but if you read the small print, it says that is the early settlement figure rebate ( so no deal there) it then goes on to say it then may be able to offer credit once the debt is clear....?
She would not take a loan out with these sort infact she has not increased her debt but is paying all debts off slowly and upping when she can afford it as debts are paid off.0 -
I wouldn;t sign a new aggreement either with Provident their fee's are outrageous0

Any more views on this or any one had the same type of letter?0

When did your friend first take out the original credit card account?
It may well be that they are desperate to get them to sign a new credit agreement because they do not have any copy of the original CC agreement.
There is no need to sign any new agreement to agree payment terms. I would say doing so would be a very bad idea.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Ive had the same letter yesterday from them for a debt of £89!!!
They say Wescott passed it on to them but I have absolutely no knowledge of this debt ever not a single letter before this from Wescot or anyone else and the letter said it was passed originally from Oxendales catalogue.
I have never had an Oxendales acc and phoned them up to see what they were on about apparently it was a debt from 2000. However in 2000 I would only just have turned 17!! And I know for a fact that debt isnt mine. I have never had any letters from Oxendales, Wescot or anyone else before now about this so the debt is Statute barred regardless!
This alleged debt isnt recorded on Equifax anyway so I'm just going to ignore them. I still havent figured out if I should contact the fraud dept of Oxendales about it- seeing as I've never had anything from them.
£89 though I mean come on - expecting me to sign an agreement with a representative at the door that their going to send round for £1.25 a week- I dont think so!0
