Career as a social worker

I'm thinking of retraining to be a social worker and wanted to know how people who do the job find it. Would be great to hear from anyone who is currently undertaking the course to hear about costs, bursaries and what it's like.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob
Have you any idea which area of social work that you are interested in?
The job is emotionally draining, full of red tape and some nights you can't sleep because you're hoping that you made the right decision. But, the clients in most cases (I worked in mental health) were fantastic and I felt very honoured to hear their life stories.
Good luck0 -
No, not really too sure. Am only really just looking into it at the moment. I am worried about the issue of mentally taking it home buti guess that's not really something you can know until you do it. I suppose doing some volunteer work, as well as possibly being a prerequisite to get on a course, would help with finding that out though. And if, you know, your history...0

You really need to get some substantial work experience under your belt, preferably with one or more of the various client groups.
Are you already qualified to do the Social Work degree?0 -
I am applying for an MA in social work and I am wanting to work within inclusion and education. Aswell as having relevant degree, I have done various voluntary work such as working in a school, the CAB and I am doing a placement with Gypsy Travellers this year.
I know that you have to have GCSEs in maths and English.0 -
I'm qualified in terms of education but not got any real experience. Have worked a fair bit with assylum seekers but not in a social work context. And if, you know, your history...0

Hi, one thing is for sure, you will never be out of work!! as for taking the work home in your mind, well that depends on whether you have case responsibility and the issues of the case. I am a qualified social worker in child protection, yes you do take it home, not only in your head!! (endless amounts of paperwork) There is a lack of social workers (manchester) and you get bogged down trying to 'stick plasters' on cases because you haven't got enough time to really work the case. The bad press also gets you down!!
Good luck :eek:0
