Cheese(y!) advice please!

So I wondered down to my local asda near work today - and noticed they have a HUGE pile of mozzerella that has been whoops-ed - smart price mozzerella is down to 28 pence has their own brand blocks are down to 1 pound.

I was thinking - at 28 pence - I could pick one up and use it in my up and coming meals as a nice cheap cheese to bulk out the rest of my cheeses but then realised I wasn't sure:

Can you freeze mozzerella? Does it need to be treated differently? How long will it last if I just bought a block and kept it in the refrigerator? Just that the asda smart price mozzerella comes in a liquid... to preserve it I assume... and I dunno how well it will go down with being frozen!

I started thinking down the "well if I just bought some mince..." route - then quickly slapped my brain back to DFW mode! Then remembered there is a large community of people far wiser than me who can probably help with this question...!

Any advice?

mozzarella can be frozen - think pizzas - but needs to be kept in liquid if it's unwrapped in the fridge

I got four packs of whoopsie mozzerella in brine the other week and just froze it in the pack. It's fine like that but does need a little time to defrost fully.

The other thing I've done with mozzerella in the past is grate it and mix it 50:50 with cheddar then frozen it in a bag to use as pizza topping.

  • It's whey. It's fine to freeze it in the whey, and it defrosts just fine. I would slice and grate it, and put it in portions in freezer bags though, as you don't always need a full one when it's defrosted.

Buy as much as you can afford. Stick it in pasta sauces to enrich them, use instead of cheese sauce on a lasagne, use it in sandwiches(my fave is a wrap with mayo spread on, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and mozarella and basil if you have any, mega yum and v. luxurious tasting), put in mashed potatoes with loads of salt and pepper. Breadcrumb and deep fry and serve with a spicy tomato salsa or sauce.

Can you tell I love it? I'd climb over you to get to the whoopsied Mozarella. I usually buy the cheapie stuff but some of the more luxury ones are to die for...............

  • you can freeze the block mozzarella too. Grate it all then put it in a tub in the freezer. You should be able to break off usable clumps.

I open froze some mozerella last night. Put it all out in a baking sheet so it didnt stick together. Afterwards I realised how silly that possibly was as i could just have fired the bag in like it was !:rotfl:

  • Thanks Folks!

I will go down after work - I dunno what it is with this Asda but there is loads of cheeses, chicken, beef... even lamb that seems to be whoopsied at the moment!

Only on Friday they had over a dozen bags of spuds - all whoopsied! I am not complaining though cause I am off after work to see how much mozzerella I can fit in my rucksack!:rotfl:
