"Dirt Cheap CD's" from Australia

They sell brand new CD's for AUS $10. If you buy a few, the saving can be really good. I bought 4 CD's (Led Zep, Abba, Hendrix and Bowie) for AUS $10 each. It ended up costing me £22.23 for all 4, including delivery. The choice isn't amazing, but there's some good titles in there.

£22 is over the customs limit so you are in severe danger of getting charged tax and duty.

What's their position on delivery charges?

I have recently used https://www.playcentric.com who shipped to me from Canada (altho they are based in the US) for around $10 a CD or just over £5. Free delivery and each sent separately so no customs problems. Very quick too - about the same as CD-WOW.

I ordered some DVD boxsets from dvdorchard, they're based in Australia and I took the chance of being charged duty on them as I couldn't buy them anywhere else. I was lucky they didn't get stopped at customs.

Yes, point taken about the import tax. I ordered them without rembering about the £18 limit.

Remind me... is it £18 worth of goods? Or the total order being worth £18?

    3 CD's, without P+P is £11.10. With P+P it's £17.41

    4 CD's, without P+P is £14.80. With P+P it's £22.23

Thanks for the http://www.playcentric.com site. Looks like some great deals on there. Now where's that credit card again?

I am not 100% sure about this, but I would presume that it's the value of the goods themselves that counts.

As both CD-WOW and playcentric don't specify separate delivery charges, the point doesn't apply - but then again, I suppose they could split the cost out and say that a £20 item including delivery was actually £16 + £4 delivery (or whatever).
  • From experience I know the answer to this. The £18. is the amount of the goods listed on the Customs label. However, if the goods come to more than £18. then you will be charged duty on the goods and the postage AND on top of that Royal Mail charge you a fee to collect the duty!!

A point to remember if you are charged duty and find you need to return an item which will then reduce the cost of goods to under the £18. contact Customs and Excise, explain your situation and they will send you a form to complete and you will get a refund.

I have found sometimes if i have ordered from ezydvd in australia or some canadian ones that in the special requests you can have the envelope/package marked as gift and that gets round having to pay customs, not sure if this is right or not but has worked for me.

Gifts are not necessarily exempt from VAT/duty - but usually only relevant for higher priced goods.

From memory the limit is around £38 if it's marked as a Gift.
If it's not a bargain, it's not worth buying :D

I've recently used playcentric.com too - and am planning to use them again shortly. The cd I got seemed to be sent from Belize... They were quick & competitive. Nowadays I tend to trawl thru CDwow, Play.com, CDjungle & playcentric to see who has the best price. I found CDjungle quite slow but otherwise OK

  • I thought I would give the australian sites a go but found nobody could beat Tesco's on this occasion.£6.97 as compared £9 up to £12.00.
