Organ of stone makes me think of the Heart of Midlothian on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_Midlothian_%28Royal_Mile%29

Not sure about the rest of it....

*edit* Apparently the Royal Mile is made up of six streets not five, but it seemed right to me....Wiki reference for help... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Mile
  • Holyrood Palace is five streets down the Royal Mile from the Heart of Midlothian.

Holyrood Palace was set on fire in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell.

Currently looking for Scottish books and poems of 1650...

Tale relates to a "son of a don" according to the text.

This could be either someone who was son of a University Don or someone who was a son of Aberdeen (Footie team being the Dons)

    My brain hurts :rotfl:
  • Holyrood Abbey is also there and was ruined in 1768 but neither this year nor 1650 mark the publication of any significant tales or poems.

I think the key is "when that which WAS there..." I think we are looking for something that has now gone completely.

The Abbey has also been destroyed a couple of times too - and more successfully than Holyroodhouse - I'll have a look for more info :D
  • May be barking up the wrong tree but there was a great fire of Edinburgh in 1824 which destroyed a lot of the old town. That year also saw the publication of Sir Walter Scott's Redgauntlet which looks promising.

In the first era (1st-6th editions, 1768-1826), the Britannica was controlled by the people who first wrote it, Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell, and by their friends and relations, such as Thomas Bonar, George Gleig and Archibald Constable. The Britannica was first published between 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh
  • Oh how stupid have I been. Also published in 1824 Don Juan by Lord Byron a poem in 16 cantons!

Would the remote home then be "Gight" as in Gight Castle, his ancestral home?
  • Well the whole Don Juan thing seems to fit so well but I can't find any useful "word three".
