Old Kenwood Chef k beater

I have a very old Kenwood Chef and use it regularly. Just lately I have noticed that the k beater and the whisk seem to be covered in a greyish dust after they have been stored for a day. It is difficult to wash off, but now I am beginning to worry about what it is. Has any one else had this problem. The beaters do look very old and have lost their shine.

Hope some one can help.
Thanks for all the tips on here.

Have you been putting them in the dishwasher? The chemicals in the dishwasher tablets react with the protective shiney coating on the beater and you get this matt grey effect. It's not dangerous but it's better to wash this sort of thing by hand.

I had spares so I just threw my damaged ones out, must admit. You can get the basic beaters very cheaply on ebay. Someone here said though that if you hand washed them then dried and oiled them before putting them away the powdery bloom did not form. Worth a try?
