I think its( demerera) more healthy because white sugar has gone through a chemical process.(refined) I personally find i get a headache when i have white sugar.

Its still sugar and still fattening, and no more nutritious, but it tastes better. OH insists on demerara in his coffee.
I use it as a crunchy topping when baking cakes etc. HTH
  • Demerara sugar is as natural as sugar can get really. White sugar is bleached with chemicals, and may contain traces of the bleaching agents used in the process. Of course, any minerals are also lost if bleached, so demerara is 'healthier' in that sense.

  • Let me add to this for debate sake.....brown sugar can be made in two ways.
One is to sell it at the partially processed brown stage, before you get to the white sugar stage.
The other way is to add molasses back to the pure white sugar - the advantage of this being that the consistency of the “brown sugar” can be more tightly controlled.
    As for nutrition?
Well, white sugar is 99.9 per cent sucrose, while brown sugar is about 97 per cent sucrose, 2 per cent water and 1 per cent other stuff.
The United Nations health bodies recommend that sugars should make up no more than 10 per cent of your daily energy.
Even if brown sugar made up 10 per cent of your daily energy, it would contribute less than 10 per cent of your daily calcium, magnesium and potassium. There are simply not many nutrients in sugar-cane juice.
Brown sugar is only marginally different from white sugar - and they are both sweet nothings.....

And I only use demerara too.....makes you wonder....

  • Brown sugar is much better than white. As mentioned previously, it's not gone through the bleaching process. More flavour too.

Brown sugar is usually better then white sugar- however, just like with bread, some manufacturers will simply use brown dye in white (refined) sugar just to sell it as brown sugar. Be aware and try to find something illustrating "unrefined" on the packet somewhere.
  • I bet the brown molasses sugar I use in Christmas puds is not very healthy!
