Sewing machine repairs - how much?

Hi Oldstylers,
Has anyone here had the experience of getting a sewing machine repaired?
I have an ancient machine that I acquired on freecycle, and the mechanism seems to work OK but the tension is always too tight, even on the lowest setting and it keeps breaking the thread.
The repair people won't quote me anything without seeing it first - but all I want to know is, how much roughly do sewing machines usually cost to repair? Anything more than about £25 is not worth bothering with.
Thanks!

Hi, I have a machine that is now 25 years old and when I have put it in for a service recently that has cost me about £25 but that is from a singer shop. Anything that they find that doesnt come under the service could obviously be more, bit like a car until they look they arent sure what is wrong.
Perhaps there may be someone local that could look at it? There was an old chap near us that has looked after my machine for years but unfortunatley can't see as well now so no longer fixes machines. Sorry I can't be any further help.0
