Big Tesco shop - little Aldi shops

Am about to become unemployed and so will have more time to shop around for bargains.

Am thinking about doing a big, monthly Tesco delivery (or wherever mysupermarket says is cheapest) for branded stuff (which we don't use much of - currently have a list of 8 items) and then mini Aldi shops as it's at the top of the road and will get me out of the house.

Having had a quick look at the weekend, I'm not sure how much this will actually save. Cat food is the same price, as is soya milk (our two biggest non branded expenses).

I'm currently trying to clean and feed 2 adults, 1 lactose intolerant toddler and 4 cats on £90 a week at Tesco, but find it hard. I'm thinking about making my own bread (does Aldi usually do yeast ? couldn't spot any) and baking more generally. Made some yummy vegan muffins over the weekend that my DD hoovered up. I already meal plan and bulk cook, and we take packed lunches to work every day.

What do you think?

  • personally i don't find tesco cheap i shop at asda much cheaper and nicer home brands but it depends which store u have close

could u buy stuff u usually get fromn aldi and freeze it so cuts down on visits to shops then u will save cause most people don't just buy the things they go in for when they go to shops
  • I use mysupermarket every time I shop and Tesco always comes up cheaper by at least £30 on a £90 shop. Maybe cos I don't buy many brands?

I find mysupermarket always comes out cheapest on the supermarket I started with - to do with special offers I think, and an interesting choice of alternatives.

For me where Aldi/Lidl wins is fruit and veg which is much cheaper, far less impulse buys, and sheer time saved. 30 mins tops for round, finished and back in the car.

Funny that as whenever i used mysupermarket ASDA always came up cheaper. As you said though, it depends on what you're buying.

I tried a months shop at Lidles and that seemed about the same price as ASDA but with less choice. I suppose if you've got the time you can work out which products are cheapest in each of your local supermarkets and then split your shopping up.
  • just bombed through with my branded list only (Ribena, Vitalite, Alpro yoghurts type things) and Tesco still cheapest. Will check the alternatives though - good point, thanks.
  • Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. • Tescum are miles dearer than morrisons or asda but they spin that they are, also they have a terrible attitude to customers.
  • Thanks Penelope for moving the thread.

I don't find Asda or Morrisons cheaper on the things I buy, and mysupermarket backs that up with regards to Asda at least. Plus to shop at Morrisons I'd have to do a 40 mile round trip.

I think Aldi might ne cheaper, but again it doesn't seem to be on the face of it.
  • I find Aldi wins partly because there is less choice, so less impulse buys. I reckon we can save easily £20 a week by doing Aldi as main shop, then getting stuff we couldn't find in Sainsburys. Will take you a week or two to get used to Aldi, but it's worth it.

I have been in your position in the past and recommend that if you can, shop around all the major supermarkets looking for their special offers, perhaps start a price book to make sure its really a bargain?

One reason I suggest this is that you do need to get out of the house. Window shopping is frustrating when you have no money, in a supermarket you can always justify a little spending on food. It helps fend off depression and isolation a little. Good luck and HTH.
