I don't understand how wedding dress shopping works

  • I was incredibly lucky. May I take a moment to revel in how lucky I was, please indulge for a second. I've recently moved to the Isle of Man where there is less choice than I previously would have had in Nottingham where I used to live. I only know of 3 bridal shops here, one of which is too exclusive and way out of my budget.
I went to the nearest to me and the first 3 dresses I tried on were far too small, all size 16 which is what I usually am. The 4th I rejected because it looked really similar to my best friend's, who only got married last year, and the 5th was perfect. It fit me perfectly, at a size 16 and is gorgeous. It's Jenny Packham, who I'd never heard of before but seems to be a fairly big designer, but it was half price and therefore comfortably within budget. After 2 more fittings I'm still inctredibly happy with it and apart from taking up 2 inches on the hem it fits me perfectly, with a zip rather than lace-up fastening.

    It can be easy.....

Congratulations SkyKitty. I'm just hoping I get this lucky. I was googling for dresses that fit larger busts earlier and the name Jenny Packham popped up. Sounds like she could be a good bet for those of us who aren't walking rakes. :D
  • I can assure you I am indeed no rake, and it is beautiful and does amazing things for my figure. I didn't even realise I could have a figure until I put it on.

You thought yours was easy. I fell for my dress which fitted perfectly- not even a stich needed doing. Needless to say I bought the immaculate sample then and there and even got a hefty discount.
  • I bow down before you......(lol)
  • You could always try a factory outlet where all the dresses are just there to try and buy if they fit. End of lines, over stocked, minor faults - I think mine was a reject cos it has a couple of spangles missing off the corset but no-one's going to notice that and it was 66% off as a result! Might help you find something that suits even if you don't buy it from that particular place?

If you live anywhere the midlands the place I went to was near Leicester.
    Married Ajichombo on 17th April 2010 :j
  • There are some packhams that are definately not for the well endowed in the chest region unless you fancy falling out! lol Although the flowing lines elsewhere are really flattering and the fabrics are luxurious (as are the prices!!
