Can wisdom teeth coming through make you poorly?!

Hi,

I don't know whether this is a daft question or not!!

My 15 year old son has been off food yesterday and today (anybody with a 15 year old boy knows somethings got to be wrong for them to be off food!). He's got flu like symptons cold then feverish and very tired - he has just volunteered himself to go to bed in about 10 mins.

Obviously this could be flu, however this morning he said he had a new back tooth just coming through, and I don't know whether this is just a coincidence.

When they are babies, we put everything down to teeth - do you think this applies when they are 15 too?!

Unfortunately he is supposed to start his yr 10 exams tomorrow.

    very unlikely...

if he has pain from the the tooth coming through then maybe it could be related....but probably just one of the nasty bugs going around.

    fluids and lots of sleep....

15 is a bit young for a wisdom tooth as well.

More likely a second molar, which is the one before wisdom teeth.

Babies teething doesn't cause any other symptoms other than a bit of grouchiness. The red cheeks, bad nappies and other 'symptoms' are most likely REAL infections, as the period from 6 months to 2 years (When the teeth are coming through) is also the time when aquired immunity from mothers immune system & milk is running out, and so the babies are actually having to fight bugs on their own for the first time.

I don't care what mothers 'believe' about teething, but if a child looks poorly, it shouldn't just be put down to 'teething' and dismissed as nothing. The child should be watched carefully and action taken if any cause for concern arises.

Having said all that - When wisdom teeth do come through - generally between 18 and 25 yrs of age, due to their position, they can get infection around the gum.

An infection anywhere can cause a raised temperature and a feeling of 'poorlyness'. In some circumstances, antibiotics are necessary. In these cases though, the area around the tooth will be obviously infected (Swollen & red & painful) and there will be no doubt that it is the tooth to blame.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

weird coincidence - im 19 and think ive got wisdom teeth coming through at the back and its making me feel absolutly miserable too :S slightly off food (but generally because its painful to eat) very sleep and tired im in bed early too (for me anyway) had a constant headache

i was thinking the headache and the teeth were a coincidence but a few people have said its common that theyve had a headache/felt unwell when there wisdom teeth came through

Thanks for all your replies - he is not in any pain with the tooth coming through - I just presumed (wrongly!) that as it was at the back it was a wisdom tooth, so he has obviously picked up a bug.

Oh well looks like I'll have to be nurse tomorrow - poor lamb!

Might be 15, but when their poorly they still want some TLC.

That is what makes me and OH laugh, when any of our 3 children have been ill (I think poorly is the Northern Lass in me!) both sets of grandparents have either put it down to teething or a sore throat - no matter the symptoms.....must be a generation thing ;)

And I once had an 84 yr old with pain under a full denture that turned out to be a wisdom tooth coming through! :p

Cheered her up no end to go away knowing she had the problems of an 18 yr old!

I was 21 when I had my wisdom teeth out, they had been giving me problems for a couple of years before that - it might be unlikely but could be possible.
If there is an infection where they are coming through it could cause those symptoms.
I agree its probably more likely just one of these bugs tho :)
