We're going to pay for the best man, the ushers and father of the groom to hire suits. Usually there are offers on where the groom gets his free etc. I wouldn't want other people to be out of pocket for taking part in my wedding. However, if budget is an issue i don't think it's wrong to discuss with the ushers whether they'd be willing to pay for their own or maybe they already have a nice suit they could wear?0

I think you should pay for it if you want them to wear what you want. We bought our suits (all of the men's request and paid half towards them (what the hire would cost).0

Hi there, I ahve paid for everything for my bridesmaids and mil2b has paid for oh's suit but the other men are just wearing a normal black suit which they all have. We aren't having morning suits or anything so it is working out great this way. Our wedding is quite relaxed with an evening ball feel! if you have a colour scheme or want everyone to wear a particular style of suit then i think its a bit cheeky to ask them to sort it themselves, as its more than likely they will have to buy it. if its just plain suits you're having and you're not bothered about varying colours then i'd say its fine to ask them to wear their own. IMO why should someone have to pay to join your wedding party? its your day after all.
my nan said she would pay for my dress and my BM's dresses as a wedding present to me, but only after i said the BM's dresses i'd chosen worked out to about £35 each. before that she thought they'd pay for them themselves :eek:Mummy to

Agree with emlou, if you want them all matching or to wear something particular, then you should pay.
We're not having matching suits, people can just come in their own suits.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
We paid for BM'S dresses and when it came down to the Highland wear for the males my Dad said there was no way he would wear a kilt and was not having us fork out for a suit when he had a perfectly good hatches matches and dispatches one in the wardrobe that needed airing.
Our best man is paying for his own as he is also a stubborn get and said after buying the MOH's dress who is his wife at least he will benefit from seeing it worn time and time again as it is a classy evening dress instead of your standard BM dress.
So i think it may depend on whom you invite to carry out certain roles. Theres always going to be a split in your party of those who insist on paying their own way and those who expect everything free.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

We paid the first £100 towards the suit hire as a whole, because we used my student discount and the 'groom goes free' offer applied! Each of our ushers and the best man had to pay about £40 for the suit hire, but they love them. However ours are all close friends and we discussed it all upfront when we invited them to be our ushers, and of course we will get them a nice present to say thanks! They were just chuffed that they got to organise the stag do lol!!0

we put aside £700 for suits, having 8 men and as groom goes free. Each and every one of them have turned round and said that they want to get hteir own! i was shocked and didn't expect it but hey saved us £700 : ) may be they also offered, I can't imagine anyone just assuming that people will pay for their own!!!DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 315Married 03/04/2010with many thanks to MSE Wedding boardLO 23/03/12 Special thanks to TTC thread0

I've never known of the men paying for their own - but I guess if they are ushers/BM etc, then you must be in a position to be close enough to at least discuss it.
As already mentioned, it all depends if you want them matching or not - as if you are telling them what to wear, then i think its only fair for the bride and groom to pay. Another option may be getting them to wear a black suit, and you buying them waistcoats/cravats or ties to co-ordinate. Buying them seperatly would prob work out cheaper than hiring a whole suit....Money spending expert since 1983....0
