Silly question - ground rice

I was wanting to make a rice pudding for tonight, but we dont get pudding rice here - only the normal long grain and I do have some basamati in the cupboard. If I put some lg rice raw in the liquidiser - would that end up something like a pudding rice? Its just a time thing coz the lg way takes hours in the oven....

I wouldn't have thought so. It won't change the nature of the rice. The thing about pudding rice is that unlike long grain it absorbs the milk and releases its starch making it creamy and unctuous. Chopping up the basmati won't change its nature. Pudding rice is not just shorter than long grain it is fatter too.

You can make a nice sweet rice dessert with basmati though. Try googling 'Indian rice pudding'.

My husband and daughter - the two most Indian members of the family  - always have to have butter on their rice. We always have Basmati because it's the only thing my DH will allow in the house.

I was eating some of their rice with butter on last night (we had lamb koftas with it) and thinking how much it tasted like rice pudding. So, if you don't wash the basmati first, I think it could be jolly successful - it certainly breaks down more easily than long grain.

I would suggest you put your rice, sugar, milk and butter in a saucepan and bring it to the boil first, then put it in the oven with dotted butter and grated nutmeg. That should cut down the cooking time.
