I'm about to move to Sheffield - can anyone give me the low-down on what areas to live in/avoid?

Also any letting agents to use/avoid?

TIA

  • Ummn, depends what you want - your age, if you have kids, if you want a garden, to be close to certain things, if you drive...

    just avoid Manor Park.
  • I second avoid manor park!

I think its fair to say West Sheffield is generally seen as being more affluent and there are some lovely leafy areas. Crookes, Crosspool, Ranmoor, Fulwood, etc.

How close to the city do you want to be?
  • Some areas of Ecclesall are generally ok, and Hillsborough is excellent if you like countryside although try and stay away from living too close to the shops as it can be loud at night. Beighton/Mosborough/Eckington could also be worth a try?

I agree about the Manor, stay well away from it!

Rents in Hillsborough are in my opinion very good value, it has good transport links, shops and facilities.

I've lived in Sheffield all my life and Mike Jolly estates and Saxton Mee are good. As previously stated it depends on your circumstances. If youre young and like night life Ecclesall Road, Broomhill, Hunters Bar, Banner Cross are areas where there's loads of young people, bars and nightlife. If you've kids, the best schools are on the west side of town in areas as stated before. To be honest I've recently been looking at rental prices and you can get acommodation in the best areas for around the same price as not so good areas if you're prepared to look around. I would suggest going on Sheffield Forum to get an idea of things and get local advice.
