Anyone help a techno-dunce? please?

Hi all

I fell off the budget wagon this week, when my car broke down.
But I'm back and more determined than ever to get to grips with it all.

i am looking for some advice about telephones, internet and tv. Now, please bare in mind I am not technically minded at all.

i have ntl tv (which they are not charging me for since I phoned up and said I wanted to be disconnected) It's only the basic package, buut all I really watch is the news and BBC 3 - althought I find the on demand bit v useful.

The phone package is also ntl, with landline calls included on evenings and week-ends. (I don't use this much and I also get 750 free minutes a month on my mobile.

For my internet use dial up.
My last payment to NTL was £32.36. Is there a better/cheaper way and if so what do I do?
BF just talks using techi words I don't understand when I ask him!

I am grateful for any help you can offer?

I'm lucky enough to work for ntl and get the discount staff package - broadband, TV and phone normally comes to about £40 quid a month (give or take a few quid, depending on how much we;ve used the phone). As a result I've never really had to shop around and compare prices and features of broadband...the range of choices scares me as they've all got different rates, offers, speeds...

I would say that the movies aren't worth paying for. Even with the staff discount I'm considering ditching them. I've asked my wife and daughter to write down over the next couple of months how many movies they watch (I've not watched any for ages, they're nearly all rubbish).

Sorry couldn't answer your question re broadband. Are there no comparison sites for broadband services, like you get for gas / electric comparisons? I'm sure someone must know...

i was trying to tot this up to be honest before. Did write a rpely, but then deleted it- couldnt really work it out

how much is NTL line rental alone?

madasafish often quoted as cheapest 13.99 a month

primus 2 or other prediallers for free & discount calls ( free package with primus)

if you have been with NTL a while will your box pick up digi signals? a digibox costs £23 in argos there might be cheaper. you get news, bbc 3 & 4 and e4, more 4 etc. one off cost

i couldnt work out whether the broadband & line rental would be cheaper though
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
