which glue to use...

I got a nice top it was from a car boot, there was nothing wrong with it, however when I (carefully) washed it some of the little 'rhinestones' came off. I retreived probably all of them and I want to glue them back, what is the correct glue to use please, does anybody know? also I will extra carefully handwash it from now on, though I'd put it on delicate wool wash in view of the stones - infact I think the label even said wash on a 40. Its cotton with lycra. I have got some craft glue pva, but I can't imagine this would be effective enough, I'm using it currently to cover shoeboxes with calico, then put a photo of the shoe, onto the box and stack them., it seems ok for this purpose. Answers if you please! many thanks.

Copydex will certainly withstand machine washing but you have to be very patient and give the glue plenty of time to go tacky. You need to paint it thinly onto both surface and allow 15-20 mins for the glue to become touch dry before you press them together. You would also have to be very careful with it since copydex obviously doesn't dry clear.
You can buy washable fabric glue which will dry in a minute or two and which dry clear eg. Bostick Sew Simple, UHU Fabric Glue, Pebeo Fabric Glue, Delta Jewel Glue. I don't know what temperatures you can wash these up to or whether you have to hand wash but they must withstand handwashing at 40 degrees at least. If there is a decent haberdashers or art and craft shop anywhere near you they will sell something suitable and be able to advise you.0 -
Many thanks KITTIWOZ, Thanks for taking the time to reply to this, there's a lot of info there for me, so here goes, - you know, I never even thought of craftshops....doh...! Its good to know the names of the different sorts of glues as well! brilliant. PS ...Don't suppose you know how to get evo-stick (from a different project) off my sweatshirt sleeve do you? I have picked at it some came off but I don't want to damage the fabric....washing has not made a difference.Thanks.:j0
