You can open a new account as soon as you walk out of the court.

Co-op seems to be the better account, Barclays can be a bit his and miss with ease of opening the account and can give you the run around, plus they will take online banking away as soon as BR is flagged up on your credit file.

  • We opened our co op account about a month before we went bankrupt so we could switch our dd's over etc. The OR did mention in our interview that the co op had contacted him but he told them that he had no interest in it and everything kept running as normal.

If you want to get the ball rolling you could ring the Coop, I think they are open late and n Sunday too (I think - not sure!). I'd advise to open it over the phone or in person (not online) so you can tell them about your BR and make sure it is the correct account you are trying to open.

  • Opening my Co-Op one was the first thing I did when I walked out of court. Very straightforward - took a couple of weeks to be approved though. Opening pre BR is probably the best bet, just to have it in place, but I wouldn't leave a lot of money in it just in case it is frozen.

Yip, out of the court into the Coop. I've not had any problems and like the online banking I can have with them.

  • ok many thanks for that, i was going for barclays because i dont have a co-op bank anywhere near me whereas barclays are everywhere. i wasnt sure that if i opened one up pre hearing that the or would have it frozen like the existing account. will try and get one sorted tomorrow.

thank you all for your replies
  • You don't need a Co-op branch near you, I have had an account for 3 years and have never set foot in a branch.

Set your account up over the phone, if you need to deposit money or cheques then you can do so through the Post Office, you get telephone and internet banking, an electron card and can use any link machine.
