I use food umbrellas to cover fruit and tomatoes or any food really to keep the flies away. They are cheap and fold up for easy storage when not in use0

I have kept mine in the fridge wrapped in a couple of tea towels, preferably in the warmest part of your fridge.
Banana's are brought to Europe in chilled containers to stop them ripening, you just need to try to keep them cool but not too cool.Piglet
