I would think its usual to have to be actually at your work station all ready prepared ready to start work at the beginning of your shift. I have to be sat at my desk ready to work at 8am so I have to get there 10 mins or so before to log into pc, unlock desk as take out equipment ready to start etc. I am expected to work till 4pm then log out and pack away once 4pm has passed.

  • At Asda we have to clock in 5 mins before our shift (no earlier tho) and then have a huddle etc before work, - dont get paid for the 5 mins, same when finishing, we dont get paid for 5 mins if we are late getting out, but get paid everything after the 5 mins.

    a huddle? What's that, then?
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Its like a small brief, informing you of the previous days takings, anything going on! I was at Asda for over 4 years and i only went to a "huddle" about once a month!!!

Regarding the early time, we have to be at our desk for our start time (mine 8 am) and ready to start work, this means being logged on and having all (11 for me) applications open - im usally reading my emails at that point!

My point being is that why should your employer pay you for changing at work when you are required to be at your post for 7.30 (i believe)

Staff briefs should surely be in the employer's time?

And if you are required (as opposed to personal choice) to change, especially if you are changing into PPE, then that should be in the employer's time also.

When at Comet, one of the admin staff (till people) had to cash up the tills. This wasnt too bad a job as it meant you didnt spend the majority of the night on the tills as you were slowly cashing up the tills and shutting them down.

But we were not allowed to take the last till until the last customer left the shop. When we were busy (e.g christmas) we would have customers in store until 8:15 - 8:30 every night. There would then be at least 3 tills to cash up with LARGE amounts of cash. Some days we could be there till well past 9:00 although everyone else got to go at 8:00 on the dot (unless you were the unlucky member of staff serving that last annoying customer). Once when there was a screw up with the banking me and one of the duty managers (who locked up) where there till nearly 10:00. We NEVER got paid past 8:00 when we did banking as it was expected that we should have it finished by then. As this was physically impossible by their rules, its was obvious who ever came up with the stupid rule had never done the job.

The most annoying but was the Duty Managers got paid until they left the store, as its expected they stay late to lock up etc!!
