Private renting for OAP's

Does anyone know whether Council's pay the rent of OAP's if they are privately renting?
My mum currently gets her rent paid (she's 61) as she's living in a housing association property.
She wants to move back to her home town and although she's on the council list there, it's proving difficult for her to get somewhere. However someone has mentioned that if she rents privately the council will still pay her rent as she's a pensioner - is this correct?
Thanks in advance

Has she thought of a mutual exchange? Social housing tenancies are like gold-dust and she will not enjoy the security of tenure moving into a private rental, plus if there is a discrepency between the level of rent and the LHA paid, she will have to meet it herself. Also, many landlords will not rent to LHA tenants.
You can probably model this scenario on the Entitledto website and see what the LHA rates are for the area she wishes to move on the LHA website, plus take a look a findaproperty.com to see what market rentals are.0 -
she will only get help with housing costs if her income and savings fall below the specified level0
