hi emma
have you tried buying plain rice cakes as opoosed to branded ones - that works out cheaper.
Alternatively, why not pop your own corn at home? Put a little butter or oil in a pan - about a tbsp max, add enough corn so that there is a single layer int eh pan, pop on the lid and 'cook' on a medium heat, shaking the pan so it doesn't stick.
When you hear popping listen carefully. It is finished when you can count to three without a pop.
store in a tuperware container - very cheap and as tasty as rice cakes - can add your own flavourings too.

I get the plain rice cakes from Asda for DD and they cost 59p for a pack of about 12. They are quite thick and great to put cottage cheese, peanut butter or honey on;)

Don't know about making your own, but Tesco's own brand rice cakes come in big cyllindrical packs, have same flavours as Snack a Jacks, are cheaper and lower in fat! Bargain!0

I buy rice cakes as well, although I havn't got any at the moment. I know I wouldn't by snack a jacks, would have gone for any of the supermarkets own brand. Never noticed any difference.0

If you buy the caramel snack a jacks you might want to go to www.hillbillyhousewife.com and make their caramel corn with popcorn, you can make it with or without nuts and its really nice!0

Another vote for popcorn - my method is to put 2 tbsp of sunflower oil in a lidded pan with 2 tbsp of corn.Put lid on and cook over a fairly gentle heat as it can burn easily.Wait for the pops to stop and then toss with a little parmesan or pizza seasoning.
I don't think you can recreate the puffed rice for rice cakes unless you do something with rice krispies.
You could always try polystyrene:rotfl: Sorry I'm not a fan of rice cakes.0
