Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone can help. My local market sells 5l tubs of vinegar: malt, spiced malt and distilled malt, which is fine but they also sell one called non brewed condiment. Does anyone here know what that is? its clear like the distilled.
Also, when making pickles, chutneys, etc, if the recipe calls for red wine vinegar or white wine vinegar is it safe to use normal malt? Will it alter the taste much? I was just going to try and see but its a big waste if it goes wrong...not like you only do a small amount each time!
TIA for any advice.

Non-brewed condiment is a vinegar substitute created with water, acetic acid, flavourings and caramel colour. (from the wiki.)
It's a similar chemical mix to distilled vinegar, but without the more expensive preparations of "proper" vinegar. Smartprice/value vinegars are usually made of this. It should taste just the same as brown vinegar.
It's only a game

Non-brewed condiment is what we call 'Chip Shop' Vinegar - it's a cheap alternative to vinegar. I find it much more acidic than malt vinegar and the fumes off it are quite harsh, the smell of it is enough to make my eyes water. I'd stick with the more natural proper stuff for pickles. I have never made any type of pickles with wine vinegars, but imagine they probably have a slightly more delicate flavour.Mortgage

Thanks MrsB. Tho that has just confused me even more!! Its £3.50 for the tub, the same as the others....if its a cheaper alternative, why does it cost the same?!
Dont worry I'm not asking you directly, I know you dont price my market stall!Just thinking aloud!
