things like alfafa/beansprouts etc, just stick them in a jar of water for a few days, turn when you need to and a few days later you have edibles, (http://www.backyardnature.net/simple/alf-spr.htm makes it a bit clearer!)

Great! Thanks littlejaffa. Last night I made some stir fry and thought, would not it be nice to grow my own beansprouts...? As I buy them from a supermarket, they tend to go off in a day or two.

Ace suggestion, littlejaffa. 1000 of thank you.;)

Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

I have not grown any beansprouts yet. Where can I buy them (apart from the Internet), and do you know how much they are?

As for good news..... I have some rocket perking out, and hopefully dill, chives and parsley - my mum said it might take up to a couple of weeks for these to sprout. Green figures crossed.

Edit: have you got recipes for beansprout casserole, please?

    Hello SoScrooge.

You can buy beans and seeds for sprouting in the wholefoods section of your local supermarket. Tesco has 20% off at the moment. I have mung beans and aduki beans that were about 70p each for a 500g bag that will last absolutely ages.

As you will have seen from looking at the link above, you don't need any fancy equipment, but I really like my Biosnacky Beansprouter, which is just a glass jar with a plastic filter and tilting stand that screws on top. Costs £4.50 in Lakeland.

The only downside with sprouting beans is that because they take 3-5 days to sprout it's a bit hit and miss waiting for that first day when you can get a stir fry's worth of sprouts out of the jar! Good fun watching them grow though....

We have a monthly 'grow your own' thread here, which might be worth a browse, as many of us are growing fruit and veg in pots and patio containers.

    Good luck! :T
