I know there is always a big hoo-hah about Scottish notes, as to whether they are legal tender in England...

The answer to this question is: NO, they aren't.

They aren't even legal tender in Scotland. Likewise English notes aren't legal tender in Scotland either, in fact, no notes are actually legal tender in Scotland.

Notes are however, commonly accepted for payment, so therefore you can spend them. If you ever run in to problems, simply pay with coins, which are legal tender...

It's not England that matters. Anywhere overseas at best you will get a poorer exchange rate for Scottish notes and more likely refused altogether.

exactly, that is why I take English notes.

And I hope I bring them back home with me as I normally use a Nationwide credit card for purchases and a Nationwide debit card if I need money out of an ATM.

One of the days in the future someone will post this identical question and there will be only a one word answer from one person without any comments and answers that are totally irrelevant.

    That answer will be YES.

    I live in hope:T:j

    Stan, off to sunny Spain.

Well I think my last response was VERY relevant...

Try going to a bureau de change in Spain with £1 coins and see where it gets you.

In the 1980s I took some Scottish notes into a bank in Hungary to get them changed. The staff spent a lot of time examining them, consulting documents, making phone calls and then the teller came back to me and said they were African notes???
The confusion was caused because the Clydesade Bank had David Livingstone on their notes and he was surrounded by African natives.

To some people who are getting confused. I do not intend going into a shop in Spain and handing over an English banknote. This is for emergencies. If I need to spend the English banknote I will first of all exchange it for euros at a bureau de change. However if I do not need my emergency fund I will pay the money straight back into my bank account therefore avoiding any currency conversion fees.

And I have been abroad before and tried to exchange Scottish banknotes at a bureau de change and they are even worse than trying to spend them in England. Not worth the hassle.

I was in London last May and a shop in Catford refused my Scottish tenner, so my mate had to pay for me. The best of it was I was buying a bottle of Highland Spring water.
