Help Needed PLEASE, TAX Query!!

Options
Hi, this is a little long but im in desperate need of help, i used to be self employed for about 9 months ending in jan 05 and then i stopped and became a car sales person up until jan 09 over these years i sent back my self employed taxt return for the 05/06 year in then thought that was the end of it as i was no longer self employed however th past few months iv been recieving tax letters saying that i owe returns for all the subsequent years up to this year and they have been charging me no return fees of £100, i contacted them and went into the the tax office and returned the 06/07 return and still have to do the 07/08 and 08/09 because they said i was lacking p11d information and to make matters worse i dont have any p60s or earnings on paper from the jobs and companies iv worked for. Iv now recieved another letter from them last week saying that according to the calculations i owe them £1500, the only thing is i dont no who there getting to this figure as iv always paid tax and noticed the tax coming off my pay on my pay slips. Can any one help or advise me, shout the tax office not have records of what iv earnt in these years from my employers and if so why do i need my p60s ect should they not have all this information...............

If you don't return your self assessments in time, you get a £100 fine. In addtition, HMRC will assume you are trying to avoid tax by not returning your SA and so they will estimate your tax liability, known as a determination. I guess thats what these demands are for.
The only way to overturn them and get the tax demands and fines cancelled is to do the self assessments. Yes, the tax office does have records of your earnings, but they dont know that you dont have other income until you sign a form to say so.
My advice is to complete the outstanding SA's - you can ask your employer for duplicate P60's, or a letter showing your pay and tax for the relevent years, and also for P11d details. Once you do this, the tax demands will magically disappear. But make sure you ask them to take you out of the SA system!
