legal height of corner house boundary fence

hello
i have a corner house with a 5 foot 7 inch fence.
It get all the rubbish thrown over. I would like to put up a higher fence.
How high am allowed to go??
Will I need planning permission? If so, how do I go about it?
Thank you in anticipation.

As far as I'm aware, a boundary fence can only be 1 metre high, anything over this has to have planning permission. However you can build a higher fence if it's at least 2 metres away from the highway (this means from the pavement too not just the road).

I used to have corner property and the most annoying thing for me was the number of parents who thought it was ok for their childrean to walk round my wall!

My neighbour objected when the previous owner tried to have a high fence built so I built a wall 2 metres from the highway so it formed a kind of courtyard at the back of my house. didn't cure the children walking on the outside wall but at least I couldn't see them from the back.

Forgot to mention that my lovely neighbour reported me to the Council Planning Department who came out and inspected the wall and said it was perfectly legal.

Most councils will have information on their own website. This usually has bit which gives indicators on whether planning is required or not. Aside of this you may also have to check for any covenants on your property deeds.

As far as I know, you can build a wall up to 1.2 metres without planning permission and a fence of up to 2 metres without planning permission.

Dont know about trees and hedges though which you can plant as a boundary?

When we wanted to secure our garden we were told the same as Dumbledore55 that we could only go up to a certain height or have the fence 2 meters in (i was not really prepared to lose 2 meters of my garden). So in the end we opted for privet hedges, and they've been growing for a good 4-5 years now.

You need to check you local council rules and your property deads or lease. Where I live the front gardens are restricted to very low walls or a hedge on side boundaries OR the front boundary only.

The tallest you can go in terms of stopping rubbish being thrown over the fence is a 2m fence mounted in concrete base and pillars PLUS put a trellis on top for another couple of feet.

We have the same problem being a corner house with large garden. We put conifers on the edge and a fence 6 foot high with a bamboo screen over making it about 7 foot high and 6 foot away from the pavement and conifers. The conifers are now about 7 foot high and we will now put trellis behind the tree and grow ivy up it. Once the trellis is covere we will take away the other fence making our garden 6 foot wider and about 40 foot in length. You need planning permission to put a fence by the pavement if you want a high fence but you do not need planning consent for the conifers. We were told we could put a fence 3 1/2 foot high against the pavement edge without permission. Once the conifers are full grown no one will see what you put behind them.
