Help / advice needed - unpaid BT account in my name!

Hi all,

Firstly, apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum, wasn't sure if it should go here in the Phone section, admins please feel free to move if so! :)

In the last few days I've received a letter from a credit agency (Advantis Credit) regarding an unpaid amount on a BT account. Turns out, the account is for a phone at a house in London where I was a tenant between 2001 - 2005. The BT account was indeed in my name during that time, and the bills were always paid in full and on time by myself, but when I left the house in Oct 2005 I'm pretty sure I changed the name on the account to one of the remaining tenants (which now appears to never have happened for whatever reason!)

Anyway, there's an oustanding amount of around £100 on the account from unpaid bills sent out during 2006 - after I'd left the house!! I've called BT, and after a lengthy conversation with a call centre chap, end result is I'm still responsible for this account, and they advised to discuss the matter with the landlord and/or previous tenants ...

I've been in touch with one of the previous tenants who was a friend of mine, and she's sure that the phone bill continued to be paid after I'd left, but she wasn't personally responsible for the bills, so who knows ...

So I need to call the landlord today (still have his contact numbers thankfully) and ask his advice on what to do ...

In the meantime, I've had 2 calls from the credit company re. getting this paid, and they've now given me a few days grace until Monday to investigate the matter ...

So ... any advice from anyone on what to do about this? Would it be a matter of me trying to extract money from the tenants at the time, which would be a near impossible task? Is there anyone else I can talk to to get help on this, any particular department in BT I could contact?

Also, I'm a bit concerned I'll have a black mark on my credit files because of this ... would this affect my credit history?

Any help / advice massively appreciated!! :)

I had something similar happen, i just sent a copy of my new tenant's agreement to prove i wasnt living there at the time and it was wiped, that would be the easy way to sort it :)
