changing benefits and direct ds etc to coop cashminder

hi all
im preparing for bankruptcy and have opened 2 cashminder accounts with coop.have had 2 open 2 as one is for direct payments from social services which has to be kept seperate from our day to day one.
one is in my name and the daily living one in mine and hubbys name.he went bankrupt in april this year.
im trying to keep up with everything but will no doubt end up having no choice going BR early next year.
am i able to change my dla and incapacity benefits etc over the phone to go into the new coop account ? also how easy is it to change direct debits and standing orders? i was told that both accounts would be frozen for 48 hours so would i need to make sure they are empty on the day of bankruptcy?

    Hi Lady,

Yes you can change benefits over the phone, but give them plenty of notice, they have a habit of mucking it up and sending the payments to the old account.

Changing DD's over is easy, just phone whoever the payment is to and give them your new account details.

It isn't true that your account will be frozen for 48 hours, the OR will tell co-op that they have no interest in the account and it should all carry on as normal. You don't have to empty your account before you go BR a slong as all that is in there is enough for living expenses, although some people do prefer to, just in case.

  • You just phone DLA etc and give them your new account number etc, if it's over a week before your next payment is due it will go into your new account as generally with benefits they only need around 5 working days notice as the use the BACS system
  • Posted at same time as Peachy and as I don't have experience with all benefits maybe some take longer.... I changed my CA over on a monday and the following monday it was paid into the new account but others may take longer.

With DDs they need at least 2 weeks notice to set up a new DD

I didn't empty my account before BR, I was asked how much was in there and what it was for (daily living and a utilities DD) she said that was fine and they wouldn't touch it

Just to add, whatever yopu do, no not let the tax credit people change your account details for Child Benefit. They'll offer to do this for you, but this had led to problems with quite a few members here, because it hasn't happened and CB has gone into wrong accounts.

    Ahhh!!

I've just told them to do this, this morning. Old account will probably be frozen by end of month.

What do you recommend I do?

    Thanks :A
  • Just ring up CHB yourself Swamp and ask them to change the details, shouldn't cause a problem and you are covering your back. When I changed accounts tax credits said they would tell CHB but having been stung before I rang as well and informed them and had no problems.

They did this for me too. But to make sure I rang the Child Benefit office direct, phone no. was on my award letter and informed them myself. No probs so far both CTC and CB have been paid into my new CoOp account 1 week after notifying them.

  • Hi,
Do disability living allowance and incapacity benefit get included in our joint income. Also because I am registered disabled I have a car paid for by my dla will this be taken away from me? My husband and I are both going bankrupt very soon.
    Any help gratefully received
  • From what I have read although you list your disability benefits in your SOA you also list the extra costs incurred due to the disability and this in effect cancels the money out. If your car is a mobility car paid for directly with the mobility element of your DLA I would assume they cannot touch it as it doesn't actually belong to you.
