My (little) Story

I won't bore you all with the long and sorry story, suffice to say I got myself into a bit of a pickle (slight understatement) due to the financial climate, unforseen circumstances and my unwillingness to admit I needed help sooner. I wanted to pay all my debts but strangely the bank and the numerous other financial institutions didn't seem to want my money, well not unless it had a good few pints of blood and half a limb attached.

I feel in some part that I was pushed into bankruptcy by the very companies I owe money to, all but one refused every offer and solution I came up with until I had nowhere to go but the direction of the county courts.

Today I arrived at court at 9.20 shaking like a leaf and ready to decorate the place in a beautiful shade of vomit. First I saw a very pleasant clerk who went through my - and I quote - 'perfect forms' (thanks to you wonderful people), after I signed them all, I swore the oath and paid up my money. The clerk then went off for 10 minutes or so to make up the file and then took me to another waiting room. Not much later I was called in to see the judge, who turned out to be not at all judgemental and suprisingly very sweet. He actually sympathised with my 'plight' and commented that he could see I had made every effort to pay, he then looked at the clock and declared me bankrupt at 10.05.

I was then sent back down to the clerk who filled in more paperwork and took me into her office to have a brief conversation with the OR on the phone. OR checked my name and address details and asked if I had a bank account I needed to continue using, I told her about the co-op account I had opened (again following the good advice on here) she said I could continue using it and she would write to the bank declaring no interest in it. The clerk then gave me my paperwork, she even made me 4 extra copies of the bankruptcy order, and wished me good luck.

All in all the process took 1 hour and 10 minutes. I hope this helps to put some peoples mind at ease who are yet to attend court.

  • Hey Money Penny (I'm writing this post while thinking in a bad sean connery impersonation)

I didn't feel the need to post before as all my questions had already been asked and answered, but I couldn't not thank everyone for all their help in getting me this far whether aware of it or not, that would just be rude ;)

Now I'm hoping that my experience may, in some small way, help someone else.
  • ((((hugs))))) and what an amazing person you are doing all off that on your own & still i see humour in your post

It's good to post your story of court, really for the newcomers who are panicking about this part of the process. In reading it the whole process is easy, and really it is (the actual process) the hardest part is what you put yourself through in your head.. well that all stops now (or soon, if you're like me) have good nights sleep tonight mate.

    Hi RTR

Thankyou for filling in the background...I hope you will stick around & help others with the benefit of your experience.

I think you are probably typical of a lot of `lurkers` who use this forum who maybe do not have the nerve/desire/need to post.....as I did long before I joined too.

If anyone is `lurking` & reading this then please feel free even to just` pop in` & say `hi`....knowing that no-one will `judge` or even be `shocked` about any debt situation makes a massive difference. Support is so necessary when going through BR....even just to know it exists is worth its weight in gold.

Sorry....somebody shut me up....I`m in rambling mode again tonight :D:D:D

  • Thank you Holes but I've not had the OR interview yet, could be rags to fig leaf yet ;)

Worried Sick I wasn't alone I had all the lovely people on here to help, they just didn't know it
  • Thank you Miche and Angel, I'm actually on a bit of an adrenaline high or something at the moment. I think it's the anticipation of the welcome pack (I nearly choked when the OR called it that on the phone), I'm now expecting a great big box of goodies to arrive which the OR leaps out of to put a mint on my pillow
