Help - i'm a bit confused!!

Hi there - we have been given a gift of £1000 for our 2 children (5 & 3 year olds) from a great grandparent. We want to open a savings account for them. The money can be locked away for a few years...if this gets a better rate. We will not be able to add to the amount on a monthly basis.
I'm assuming we open the accounts in the childrens names and we act like 'power of autourney' for them?
Can anyone suggest an account? Or any words of help would be appreciated.
Thanks
