So what have we learnt from the recession?

I figured he was trying to say Mr and Mrs Average should be able to afford a decent semi in an average area on the average wage.
Ahh, okay. I'd go about arguing that a) there is no average and b) what he described isn't an accurate representation of our concept of average. I've done that loads on here though, so can't be bothered again.
I was genuinely enjoying your post though Graham, then it stopped! I was kinda sucked in, like a novel. I wanted to know how your family finished up.0 -

Kinda. I was saying how are they going to afford just a house to home them and their two kids.
Doesn't have to be a pretty house or anything. I.e., how could they possibly save the deposit?0 -
Direct personal answer to OP.....
The recession has been a bit of a pain for us but turned out to be a bit of a blessing...........in that it kicked me up the buttt (very hard) to pick up on something I had abandoned a few years back and max it out again............to keep the bread on the table (cue violins).
In fact, I was tipped out of a comfy pram into a puddle and, TBH, best thing that could have happened to us as no way would we have taken the risks we have been forced to take during the past 12 months.
Some were so terrifying that I couldn't actually speak for days ..the only human contact I would have would be on here (apart from whispering to OH and DD)
If a friend 'phoned, the words would just stick in my throat as fear can be so paralysing.
And now? I can truly say I am so glad I wasn't allowed to just coast along.....cos one does if life is ticking over OK.0 -

From this recession I have learnt:
You can save your way out of Negative Equity if you keep your job.0 -

What could be happening is there is now going to be a permanent change (well, for a few decades at least) and home ownership won't be for the majority afterall.
OH's family (loads of aunties and uncles aged 55+) were all in council or HA places until Thatcher brought in RTB. Now they own, but without RTB, none ever earnt enought to ever buy a place. OK, they all had nice semis in not too bad areas....but homeownership for them was a bit of good luck back in the mid/late eighties.0 -

They might not be able to. But a kid-free pair earning more might buy one and spend a lot more n the economy too. Way it goes really, innit?
Not trying to make a point, just pointing out the basics.0
